The carbon footprint declaration, worked through.

Article 7 of the EU Battery Regulation sets an earliest declaration date per category — EV batteries 18 February 2025, industrial batteries 18 February 2026, LMT batteries 18 August 2028 — but the duty begins on the later of that date or 12–18 months after the Article 7 methodology and declaration-format acts enter into force. As at July 2026 the methodology act is still a draft, so no category yet carries a mandatory declaration. Having the figures ready is what counts now. This worksheet walks the numbers: the four lifecycle stages of the JRC methodology, the intensity they sum to, and where each figure lands in the passport.

Honest status: the delegated act pinning the final calculation rules and the A–E performance-class boundaries is still in draft. Until it is adopted, calculate against the published JRC CFB rules for your category and record which methodology version you used — that is exactly what the methodology field is for.

The four lifecycle stages

The JRC Carbon Footprint of Batteries rules split the declaration into four stages, each expressed in kg CO₂e per kWh of the battery's total energy over its service life. Enter your figures — the declared intensity is their sum.

Performance class

Classes A–E rank batteries by intensity, but the class boundaries have not yet been set — they arrive with the delegated act. The platform records the class as a declaration field; leave it pending until the boundaries are official.

The rest of the declaration

The intensity is one field of seven. Before a passport past its category date can be activated, the platform also requires:

Calculation methodology — the JRC CFB version you calculated against (e.g. JRC CFB — EV).
Lifecycle stages — the stages your declaration covers, matching the four above.
Verification body — the independent body that verified the study.
Verification certificate reference — the certificate or report identifier.
Declaration date — plus the supporting study uploaded as a document.
